Producer Responsibility Organizations in France

France’s Extended Producer Responsibility (Responsabilité Élargie du Producteur, REP) system is one of the world’s most developed: producers finance and organize the end-of-life of what they place on the market through approved “éco-organismes” (producer responsibility organisations, PROs). These bodies coordinate collection, reuse and recycling for their member companies in each product stream, with ADEME hosting the public registry of approved PROs.

As of September 2025, ADEME indicates 19 REP streams are in operation, with 26 approved PROs. These streams span household and professional packaging, apparel/textiles (including sanitary textiles), electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, building products, furniture, toys, sports and leisure goods, chemicals, lubricants, medical sharps, tyres, vehicles, sport/recreation boats and tobacco.
