Octopus Energy has announced a major partnership with Ming Yang Smart Energy, one of the world’s leading wind turbine makers, to deliver cheaper, greener power for UK households.

The agreement was signed following the UK and China’s first Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting in seven years. Both companies say the move will drive down the cost of wind energy and make renewable power more affordable across the country.

Under the deal, Octopus will explore new software to boost cyber security while making the most of Ming Yang’s advanced onshore and offshore wind turbines. Octopus Energy Generation, the company’s renewables arm, also plans to use Ming Yang’s turbines to unlock up to 6 gigawatts of new capacity—enough to power millions of homes.

A key part of this expansion is Octopus’s “Winder” platform, launched in 2022. Winder helps connect communities that support wind farms with landowners who have suitable sites. So far, it has identified enough potential projects to supply nearly five million homes with clean electricity.

The partnership will begin with wind projects but could expand into solar and battery storage. Octopus is already one of Europe’s biggest investors in wind, managing nearly 5 GW of renewable energy worldwide.

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, said in a press statement that the collaboration would help the UK deliver “some of the cheapest and most secure energy” ever. Angie Zhang, Vice President of Ming Yang Smart Energy, added that the partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to making renewable power “affordable, reliable, and accessible” for communities across the UK.
