United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

Summary

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), founded in 1972, is the UN’s leading global authority on the environment. UNEP sets international environmental agendas, supports countries in implementing treaties, and provides science-based assessments on climate change, biodiversity, pollution and sustainable development. It hosts or supports major multilateral environmental agreements, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury and the Montreal Protocol’s secretariat functions. UNEP works to strengthen environmental governance, build capacity, reduce pollution, protect ecosystems and promote resource-efficient, low-carbon development. Through research, policy guidance and global initiatives, UNEP helps governments, businesses and societies accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.

ENCORE

ENCORE

ENCORE Natural Capital Risk Assessment Tool
Risk Management
ENCORE (Exploring Natural Capital Opportunities, Risks and Exposure) is a web-based analytical tool designed to help organisations understand dependencies and impacts on natural capital, including biodiversity, ecosystem services, and natural resources. Developed by a consortium including the Natural Capital Finance Alliance, UNEP Finance Initiative, and the World Resources Institute, ENCORE is primarily used for risk screening, portfolio analysis, and strategic assessment, particularly by financial institutions, policymakers, and sustainability teams. ENCORE is not a commercial ESG platform, not an operational tool, and not a carbon or emissions accounting system. Its role is to support high-level nature-related risk understanding, especially in the context of TNFD-aligned analysis.
