A new financial tool called the Zero-Emission Mile (ZEM) credit is offering businesses a straightforward way to tackle their transportation pollution without the major investment of building their own electric vehicle (EV) fleets.
The ZEM credit is a digital asset, similar to a carbon credit, that represents one mile traveled by a zero-emission vehicle. It was launched through a partnership between Current, a major investor in EV infrastructure, and Triangle Digital, a specialist in carbon technology and finance.
For many companies, a significant portion of their carbon footprint comes from "Scope 3 emissions"—the indirect greenhouse gases generated across their value chain, such as from shipping goods or employee travel. Reducing these emissions has been a complex challenge.
"The Zero-Emission Mile is the first-ever equivalent for transportation," said Pip Decker, CEO of Current. "Just as businesses have used Renewable Energy Credits to clean up their electricity use, they can now use ZEMs to clean up their miles."
The ZEM model decouples emission reduction from asset ownership. Instead of a company buying and managing its own electric trucks or vans, it can purchase ZEM credits. These credits are created from real, verified miles driven by EVs on Current's platform. Each credit is then issued, tracked, and retired by Triangle Digital to ensure transparency.
This provides a simple, auditable way for companies to report emission reductions. Furthermore, companies can list these ZEM credits as assets on their balance sheets, where they may increase in value before being used for sustainability compliance.
"We're creating a verifiable way to track and monetize the real-world value of clean transportation," said Darren Wolfberg of Triangle Digital. "This bridges the gap for companies who want to be sustainable but aren't ready to put EVs on the road themselves."
By creating a trusted market for these credits, the partners aim to accelerate the adoption of electric freight and transport.
