Assent Inc., leading provider of supply chain sustainability solutions, has launched a new tool to help manufacturers navigate the growing maze of packaging waste laws in North America. The supply chain sustainability firm unveiled its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Packaging solution, designed to simplify how companies track, report, and manage packaging data.

The tool, created in partnership with compliance specialist Lorax EPI, brings together supplier data collection, fee calculations, and reporting requirements into one streamlined system. The companies say this will give manufacturers better visibility into costs and allow them to identify opportunities to cut expenses through packaging design changes.

EPR rules are spreading quickly across the U.S. and Canada, shifting the burden of dealing with packaging waste from local governments to the companies that put products on shelves. States like California, Oregon, Colorado, and Minnesota have all passed their own laws, while Canada’s Federal Plastics Registry will require its first reports by September 2025. Each jurisdiction has its own requirements, creating confusion for manufacturers selling products across borders.

Industry experts warn that failing to properly collect and organize packaging data can lead to errors, fines, delays, and reputational damage. Assent says its new platform addresses those risks by automating outreach to suppliers, validating incoming data, and generating reports formatted for specific states and provinces.

“Companies are already feeling the strain of scattered reporting requirements and tight deadlines,” said Catherine Cormier, Assent’s chief product officer, in a press statement. “Our partnership with Lorax EPI helps them get ahead of the challenge, stay compliant, and even save money.”

The solution builds on Assent’s broader supply chain sustainability platform, already used worldwide for compliance and responsible sourcing. As packaging regulations expand, the company says it is positioning manufacturers to adapt quickly and avoid costly disruptions.
